In preparation for our visit to the British Museum and as part of our topic ‘Tomb Raiders’, this week we were learning about the mummification process by mummifying tomatoes.
First we cleaned the tomatoes then made an incision so that the insides could be scooped out. Next the inside the tomato was cleansed before filling it with a mixture of salt and bicarbonate of soda which draws out the moisture. Finally, the tomatoes were each put into a cup and covered completely with salt.
The mummification takes about 50 days, so we plan to check the tomatoes in 2-3 weeks to see how things are progressing.
